001 - Allons enfants de la Patrie

[Javert appears on the Plane, wearing his typical hat and frock coat, looking reasonably perplexed.]

Have I... fallen asleep while on patrol?

[The thought of doing such a thing immediately brings about shame.]

NO! This is unacceptable. I must awaken at once and resume my duties.

[He closes his eyes for a few seconds, concentrating calmly. If he were focused on returning to his reality, he might have just done it, but all he was focusing on was waking up, and he is not asleep. He reopens his eyes, expressing great frustration at the fact that he remains.]

Damn! Why can I not wake up?!

[He nearly loses himself and throws his hat on the ground, but stops himself and ponders.]

I must have been accosted. I must have been knocked over the head by some criminal and I must be unconscious. Trapped within my own mind.

[He places his hat back on his head and a focused calm overcomes his demeanor as he brandishes his cudgel]

I must have let my guard down for a moment, but I will find the one responsible and he shall be brought to justice for this... inconvenience.

Oh dear, have I said something wrong? I am ever so used to speaking what-ever comes to mind, though Sister says it is a dreadful habit and shall end me in all sorts of trouble. Of course, she hasn't stepped through a looking-glass or shrunken ever so small or grown ever so tall or, why, anything! So I daresay she might not know nearly as much as she thinks-!

Are you part of the Queen's court, then? Though you look nothing like a playing-card... hm!

[Alice stomps her foot.]

I certainly can't do that if you don't tell me your name or answer any of my questions, or, well- anything! Even that horrid Cheshire Cat was nicer to speak to!

How queer to meet someone from a place rather close to home - or at least closer than quite a lot of other places - while through the looking-glass! Though I suppose if it is a mirror version of everything, then certainly there would be a mirror France right near the mirror England... but on the opposite side, for I expect all the maps to be facing the other way entirely-!

Well, hullo then, Mister Inspector. I am ever so terrible at French, but you may call me Alice. [Curtsy]

Mother has said much the same thing before, though it is usually accompanied by "Alice, that is the wrong china set" or "Alice, you will talk someone's ear off one of these days."

Am I truly speaking French, Mister Inspector? I had always thought I spoke English, though perhaps I have been mistaken all along!

Curiouser and curiouser! Perhaps I have eaten something queer again.
