Artifact 01: Colorblocks

[ Sitting at a small, wooden table with a tall umbrella, Angela seems to be enthralled with something. The something sits on the table in front of her.

It looks like a collection of painted wood blocks, the kind of thing a baby would play with. They are currently arranged to look like a small cluster of houses, complete with angled roofs and chimneys. Suddenly, she lifts a hand, and knocks all the blocks down.

This would be disappointing for anyone admiring the block sculpture, but only briefly, as the blocks immediately start to build new houses, all on their own. ]

It takes a special kind of magic, one that died out with the mages who used it.

The secret of it was forgotten, or was there something in the genetics?

No mage really has the power to use that kind of magic anymore. Back then, a lot of mages had Eyes of Flame, gems that gave them additional power. But there was a war between those who used the stones and those who thought they were evil. The mages lost, and we were forced to hide lest we be hunted down and killed by the winning army.

[ She goes back to watching the blocks. ] We're barely able to hold on to what we have now, we've lost so many who knew the old magics.

And yet Ricrot is now slaughtering his enemies. If anyone should be feared, it should be him, not my people.

I am. My mother is the queen of the kingdom we established.

I must admit my surprise that the mages lost.

They were divided between towers for a while, and after that, they allied themselves with Emperor Lonway. Ricrot's army is large and strong, plus he had an alliance with the faeries and some of the Wisdoms. Once Lonway was defeated, they knew they stood no chance against Ricrot and fled. Those who made it to Altena survived. Those who didn't were executed.

He likes faeries but not mages. I sense some incongruities.

Faeries are powerful creatures. They have a world of their own, and can inhabit the human world as well, undetected.

Reminds me of Eternals, though I doubt they're quite equivalent.

Rather powerful cosmic beings. They live outside of time in the realm of eternity, able to manipulate matter and read minds. Apparently, they didn't know a thing about Time Lords before the Doctor brought us up to them, but if the legends about Death, Time, and Pain are true, then they know very much indeed what we are.

A Time Lord of Gallifrey, yes, one of her last scions. I'm the Master, a Prydonian and a renegade. Not that that means anything to you, but most Time Lords know to run screaming from Prydonian renegades. We're the worst of them all. Or, as I like to think of it, the best.

She smiles anyway, especially since 90% of what he just said went straight over her head. ]

I imagine there's a lot of backstory to what a Prydonian renegade is.

A Prydonian is a chapter of the Academy. The Academy is an institute on Gallifrey, the schooling institute of the Time Lords. A renegade is a Time Lord who leaves home, an errant and erring child, so far as his fellows are concerned.

[ She has a feeling there's more to this than just that. ]
