23- Tinkering here and there

[Jack is sitting on the sofa normally found in his office, a small coffee table in front of him. On it lies several tools, along with what appears to be the pieces of his wristband. It has been taken apart completely, the leather strap holding only a hollow metal casing at this point. All the wiring and small parts are laid out neatly on the surface of the table, seemingly taken apart as thoroughly as possible without actually breaking anything.]

[He is oblivious, and just keeps working]

You are attempting to fix the device?

[Looks up, then shakes his head] Just maintenance.

I stopped trying to fix it a long time ago.

Do you not want to travel? Why would you stop attempting to fix it?

I don't have the technology to fix it properly. I've spent a hundred and fifty years at it, and at this rate I'll break it before I repair it.

I have to wait until I have what I need.

That is understandable. Why do you want to travel, though? You are unhappy where you are?

Just hoping for a vacation.

Ah. I see. Perhaps it will be granted, then.

[Quirking a smile] Could always hitch a ride. I'm sure John will stop by again soon enough.

John? He is another one like you?

Not anymore. [There is the slightest annoyance in his tone]

So he is better?

[Jack fumbles with the piece he was working on, almost dropping it] John is only better if you prefer someone who's been to drug, alcohol, and murder rehab.

Perhaps. But he is natural, yes? He is not an unnatural Fact? [frowns] Why do you want to travel with him if he is not like you?

Because he doesn't care, about that particular change at least.

Are you fond of him?

[Jack pauses a moment and stops what he's doing, setting everything down on the table. He's still looking ahead while he talks] Its John; I'd hope nobody else was stupid enough to be fond of him.

I do not understand.

He's not the sort of person you would consider 'good'.

I do not consider many 'good.' I do not consider good and bad in general. I consider only what is right for the Doctor.

Jon is about as right for the Doctor as my immortality is for you.

[makes a face] And you desire to be around such a person?

I could use the break, even if it means spending time with John.

Is your life so difficult on Earth?

I wouldn't call it difficult. It's a job I have to do. It just gets tiring after a while.
