People are generally more alert when they're fighting; more aware. It's often when one doesn't expect to be injured that they are.

I ain't a stranger t' gettin' injured.

No? Well, nor I, but it's hardly pleasant regardless.

I'd rather burn myself with a smoke than not get one at all.

You'll be harming yourself regardless.

It don't matter. I haven't had one for a day an' that's not right.
