[Misaki is in the Astral kitchen, doing... well, it's not entirely clear WHAT she's doing. There are pots bubbling over on the stove, produce everywhere, piles of dishes in the sink and the oven is starting to smoke out of both sides as though attempting to cry.]

[Misaki squeaks and opens the door, releasing a black avalanche of smoke. She starts coughing, squints through the black fog, and her eyes go wide.]

[Very gingerly, she shuts the oven door, switches it off, and leans her back against it.]

...oops.

[And she proceeds to have a gigglefit.]

I listened; I just don't want to listen to a lecture. She has problems with dependency, I know that. I've known that for a while. And I... know that she puts a lot of it on me.

I thought it had more to do with her Chevalier than outdated social beliefs.

[Sorry, Sam. She's particularly sensitive on this issue. Even her DAD, at one point or another, has tried to turn her into the NPA's dancing PR bear.] Did you ask her to apologize to me?

I told her that my forgiveness didn't matter, because I'm not the one she hurt.

You're holding off on the marriage-and-kids thing because of that, right?

Sexism 101 training on the force. And that thing about you and adopting and that. And the fact that your married life apparently meant you had to have a desk job enforced on you by your heart problem.

[his eyes widen - it's likely that heart problem still exists]

The desk job wasn't forced on me. I-- [Gah she hates even thinking about it] I didn't take it until it was clear to me that staying in the field would put my team in as much danger as it did me.

[a pause] And it's not like even that kept me away. Not really.

[SAM YOU KEEP CONFUSING HER.] Checked on what?

[as if his topic jump made PERFECT SENSE] Your heart. Maybe if the doctors can get to it now, you can prevent future complications.

[hilariously, Sam is as much 'MISAKI NEEDS TO STAY ON THE FIELD' as he is 'NO MISAKI CANNOT DIE.' Because not-being-able-to-pound-the-streets = not-being-able-to-police = death.]

[Not looking at him because now the idea that there's already something wrong has been planted in her head and she doesn't like it one bit.] I'm fine. And what if they can't do anything anyway? If there was something wrong. Which there isn't.

Then at least you'll know. Which, I don't know about you, is something that's pretty bloody important to me.

Yes. Then I'll know, and so will the rest of the department, and they'll pin me to a desk before I'm thirty.

You could go to one of the doctors here. Keep it secret.

And I don't mean one of the Doctors, as I get the impression none of 'em know a thing about medical training. There's a Doctor Martha Jones, a Doctor Owen Harper, and a Doctor Gregory House, at least.

I wouldn't advise the last one.
