his eyes are no longer closed, distant things; they are wide and clear as he runs frantic hands through his hair

when he speaks, it is with a strange mix of accents, all shifting into each other]

Surely I didn't regenerate in my sleep…

[he turns this way and that, holding himself as a vibrant, earnest youth]

I doubt this is some sort of Purgatory, considering such things don't exist. Perhaps I'm hallucinating; I know that can happen, particularly if death is difficult.

[his hands fall to his sides, curling into loose fists as he begins to pace, dogged and agitated]

It's possible I was poisoned as I slept. Cowardly, but I wouldn't put it past certain people. I can use this to my advantage, if I'm careful. Best not to dwell on it all. Yes. [softer, a dark mutter] I do hope I was the only target.

[abruptly, he stops; irritably, he snaps at the stars] Shouldn't this have worn off by now?

The Doctor has mentally reverted to his youth – well, relative youth. As far as he's concerned, he's just out of Academy, ready to change the world.

He is hopeful, determined, and compassionate; he is also brisk, snarky, and condescending.

Now? Oh, well. Do you mean...the person you are or the person I am? There's a difference, you see. Mostly having to do with the Master and our clothing tastes, far as I can tell. [And possibly things that he suspects but nothing alarming, really.] And, well, I'm further along, different circumstances...

Well, you're in your fifth, now. You've spent quite a lot of time travelling the universe and I dare say you've saved it more than once. You try to make things better in the way that the Time Lords never bothered to. But you still...serve time. It's a noble cause, I think.

You travel with people. I think you're with Turlough right now but I'm a bit behind on the times. I think...around now, I started to get a bit tired. It happens. Long lives and all the thins we've seen. I loved it, though. All the travel and that funny bit in the Death Zone and Adric and Tegan and Nyssa and Turlough and even the meetings with the Master- erm, Koschei. That's a difference for you. I suppose he stayed Koschei. You don't seem to get along either way. No matter the universe, that hasn't changed yet.

[He seems to notice his tangent.] Erm, well, you do leave Gallifrey and try to help better things. I think that's the important part, here.

I knew I left - thank Omega, too - but the Master said I was... [slight shrug] Bit of an evil bastard, frankly.

Ah, well. That. [The Doctor thinks it over for a moment. He doesn't suspect Five as being evil - though he does find it curious that the Master would randomly start going 'evil!' at Theta but okay. Maybe the Master is just feeling bitchy because it's Theta being Theta at him. Or just felt like making Theta feel bad. That's likely. The Doctor chooses to say actually related thoughts.]

Assuming your Koschei hasn't changed terribly and yet you still had a falling out, I suppose your methods might be a bit different. We don't always do things we're proud of. But we try for the best.
