[Ray is on the plane, looking his usual pleasant self. what is he doing, you might ask? ...he's removing the stitches from his face. so he's pretty much sitting at a table, with a mirror, snipping the threads and ripping them out one handed, since he still has an arm in a sling]

Fuckin'...

[he growls (in a way), and yanks out another stitch, wincing a bit as it catches] Shit.

[Chris shakes his head.] That's bollocks. Blimey, Ray, I know you wouldn't, they should.

[he nods] Replacements don't know me well as you do, div. [then he pulls on a grin for Chris' sake] Don't worry none, eh? 's only temporary.

[Chris is somewhat satisfied seeing Ray grin but it's been one of those weeks.] Yeah, I suppose so. They still think I'm shut up from seeing something horrible or something.

[yeah, Ray knows that feeling] They ain't been tryin' to get you to take time off, have they?

[snipping another stitch]

[He nods.] Yeah. Think I need time off 'cos my head must be wrong.

Well, don't. 's bad enough I can't talk to you. [mild frustrated tone!]

Wasn't going to. Be bloody boring on leave like that. Don't much like being at work either, though. Boss and guv are there and you but I can't say anything.

[he finishes yanking out his stitches, and wiped what blood there is off his face with his sleeve] Can't even write anythin'. People'd notice. [he looks at himself in the mirror, examining the now mostly healed and stitchless wound] Who'd they saddle you up with, anyway? Your temp partner, I mean.

[Chris is looking it over, too, but he answers.] Hancock. He's acting like I can't even get a cuppa. Giving me one of'em looks all the time. [In his hea,d he's thinking "those looks people give boss when he goes bonkers."]

[he notes that name for later reference] Rest of 'em givin' you trouble, 'sides wantin' you to go on leave? Or just Hancock?

Haven't worked with most of'em. That new guy, uh, Blake? He's been good about it.

[Ray nods] Don't like most of 'em. Got saddled with this DC, Pangbourn. Right prat, he is. 'd take you bein' a div over him any day.

Think I know him. [He just shrugs.] I dunno, Ray, when you think it'll be over? Don't like it at all.

[a half shrug] Dunno. Don't like it either, but I decided to tough through it. It'll fix.

Yeah, boss said it'll fix up fine in a month or so.

's been... two weeks, I think?

Yeah, about that. Half way already.

Think you can make it through?

[nods quickly.] Yeah, yeah, course. I'll be fine.

[a firm nod] I'll try to put up with Pangbourn. Ugh.

It'll be all right, yeah? Just a couple more weeks.

Yeah. [though he still sort of snorts over the idea of it] Hey. When this's over, how 'bout we hit the pub. [he grins] Stay for a week.

[This suggestion heartens Chris!] Oh yeah that'd be perfect. Get pissed until we can't see straight.

[Ray knew it would!] Wouldn't mind passin' out on the floor, then. Be for a good cause.

Get up, have another pint and pass out again.
