[Adric appears on the Plane, frowning in confusion as he takes in his surroundings. Those who know him may notice he's sans his usual badge for mathematical excellence.] This can’t be right. From what the Doctor’s said Tegan’s time line just doesn’t have the technology for this sort of thing. I suppose he must’ve got the coordinates wrong again. Tegan won’t be very happy.

...I should really try and find the way out, before the others start to wonder where I am. I can’t see a door, but there must be one somewhere nearby. I haven’t even moved since I arrived, so it would be illogical for there not to be. Then again, this whole place seems pretty illogical. This can’t possibly be actual space, but the constellations look so real.

Oh, Doctor... I do wish you’d realised this wasn’t Heathrow before now. Who knows how long it might take me to find a way out.

That is fine; time does not pass in this place. But yes, accessing and leaving the Plane both involve thought. It is a simple enough procedure.

Well, I didn't think it would be that simple. How does it work?

The exact mechanics of it are still unknown to me, unfortunately. I have been attempting to discern the workings of this place since my arrival, but it is difficult.

[smiles and motions toward the books] Show me what you have been working on?

[Adric perks up considerably at that, holding out the note pad on the top to her.] I was looking at lattice theory. I already understand it, of course, but I've been looking into it in more detail.

[takes the proferred book, flipping through the contents and nodding as he speaks, smiling softly] It is a fascinating subject and you have been quite thorough. Have you discovered anything of import?

No. Nothing that hasn't already been discovered, anyway. I have managed to plot a safe route through the CVE, but that's really got nothing to do with what I've been looking at recently.

Of course not. There's nothing left for me there anymore. I just wanted to show the Doctor that it could be done, that's all.

I see. [frowns faintly -- she's never told anyone this, Adric, feel special!] It ... frightened me -- us -- when you suggested doing so. I can understand the desire to prove the Doctor wrong but I was worried you would truly leave me. I ... do not want that.

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to frighten you. I was just upset... I wanted to be taken seriously for once. I never had any real intention of leaving.

I have always taken you seriously, child. You are mine, after all. I am ... pleased, however, that you never intended such a thing as that. If I had lost you because of the Doctor, I would have been quite put out.

Of that I am glad. It truly has been too long since I have been graced with your company. So many stupid companions, foolish girls who cannot understand anything. You have always been the brightest of his companions.

They can't all have been unintelligent. Nyssa's always been very clever, and I'm sure there must have been some others who weren't stupid.

They have been few and far between, yes. Nyssa is an example of such a companion, as are you. Most of them are more like Tegan. Most of them are sobbing and pitiful.

Well, he did say he never chooses his own company. Does he ever invite them to come with him?

On occasion. Or he creates paradoxes for them, saving them from a death they should experience, allowing them to live a life they ought never have had, and then having the audacity to love them. But it is always just innocent, carefree travelling, or so he says.

It did cause excessive problems, child. It almost killed us both.
