...And now you're doing it! Why is everyone talking to themselves lately? Is it a side-effect of visiting this place?

Because if it is, I don't think I want to stay around here for very much longer. People think I'm mad enough just from my name, for some reason, I don't need an actual madness gumming it all up even worse!

[Um. She takes a deep breath and clears her throat bashfully, composing herself] Um. Sorry. Don't mean to pry, but you do seem a little... stressed. Can I get you a coffee or something?

[Being used to all sorts of outbursts, he waits until she's quite finished.]

It's a recent development, some nasally-voiced American narrating my every move. I'm assuming it'll go away. [pause, considering] Ehhh-- Tea, if you've got it. Otherwise a coffee would be great.

[Oh, look, she has a thermos. Just like a Girl Scout-- Always Come Prepared(tm). She unscrews the metal lid and hands it to him]

Sorry. Hope you like it strong.

[A pause-- because it really is quite an interesting situation, and as such it requires some consideration.]

So this is new, this voice-in-your-head business? And out-of-the-ordinary, for this place, would you say? Now that's awful intriguing. I s'pect that's what everyone else's got too. But why would everyone get it at once? Not like you can come down with a Narration Flu.

...Unless you can. I'm still sorta new here, y'see.

[he takes a few quick gulps before answering.]

If everyone else has one, it's probably an experiment. The Twins--have you met the Twins?--get a little bored sometimes and take it upon themselves to mess things up.

It doesn't sound very comforting, I know, but in a situation like this... [shrug.]

Well, I don't know if it's everyone. I mean, I'm alright, for now, anyway. But a lot of people do.

If it is the Twins-- I don't think I have met them, unless they aren't identical, in which case I can't be 'spected to know they're Twins, can I?-- then it should be alright, shouldn't it? Only it doesn't seem to be hurting anyone, just annoying the pants off 'em.

Although you gotta wonder what's the point of an experiment like that.

Maybe they're timing how long it takes us to actually go mad.

That wouldn't be a very well-executed experiment; half of the people here are mad as hatters already.

Oh-- not that that's a bad thing, of course! I've known some people who have been totally out of their minds and they're still some of the nicest, most caring and sweet people you'd ever want to meet.
