[Walking around, feeling very uncomfortable and yet unable to hide his curiosity. Still, he's trying to act as normal as possible should anyone come along, with a lax posture and hands in his pockets. He squints as he examines a swirling galaxy in the distance, before thoughtfully tapping the "floor". Thinking he might as well try getting a hold of somebody, Dexter fixes on a smile and tries calling out.]

Hello? [pauses to listen]

[cups a hand next to his mouth] Don't suppose someone could lend me a map of this place!

[Probably standing behind him - saw him at a distance.]

...Brother. You found your way here. I knew you would.

[smiles] I don't think there's a map.

[turning around...very slowly. That voice isn't exactly welcome at a time where he's not on top of what's going on]

...Bi- [hesitates, then swallows thickly] Brian.

I'd like to say you're a walking impossibility, but something about the location throws logic out the window.

At first I thought I was hallucinating all of this. Making it all up.

Including the fact that you killed me.

[his smile vanishes, but he still seems calm] But I wasn't making that up, was I?

I wish I was dreaming. But I don't think dreams work like this.

[watching Brian closely, and damn himself for- guilt?] No. That'd be a Freudian field day, imaging your own death.

If this were a dream, it would be a nightmare for you. Wouldn't it?

[Waiting, waiting for something - wants to believe in Dexter again, wants to go back to how it was before]

[reverts to staring at the "floor", and becoming increasingly irritated with himself for feeling so uncomfortable] I... I don't know. Deb's not here, so you can't- There's nothing in your way here.

So I dunno. [shrugs and looks at Brian] Should it be a nightmare?

[hard look when he mentions Deb] Anything that keeps you from me - from who you're meant to be - is in my way.

But... here, you're right. It's just the two of us. Just us, Dexter. [comes close] There's no nightmare here. Not if you don't want it.

[frowns] She's my sister. I'd like to have some choice in who I'm "meant to be with", thanks.

If you don't mind the abrupt change in subject, where IS here? [leaving big decisions for later, thanks. Would like some comfort zone back please.]

[steady look - he'll let this drop for now, but it's coming up again later]

This is the astral plane. We can go back if you want to. It's not hard.

There are other people here, too. I've heard that people come back to life if they die here. [significant look]

Go back? I think I'd like that, yeah. I can't say it puts my mind at ease to be standing on something I can't see.

[studies him for a minute] ...Brian, I-

...What is it? [genuine interest, frowning a little]

I'm sorry. [and he means it, which in itself surprises him]

[shocked, just looks at him for a few long moments.]

...Let's go back, brother. [holds out his hand] I'll show you how.

[stares at the offered hand]

I need something first.

[withdraws it a little]

You want a promise I won't hurt her. That's it, isn't it.

Is that really so much to ask? Why can't you both be important, not one over another? I'm a- [can't say person, I'm not really one, am I?] I don't want to be restricted like that.

But you want to restrict me? I'm not like you, Dexter. I don't follow a code. [almost spits out the word]

But - I don't want things to end like they did... last time. [definitely frowning now] We could start over. Start clean.

That's all I can give you. [and he wants that, too, but it's still a concession, when he's not the type to make them]

That's not what I- [goes quiet and cold at the "code" quip, and his jaw tightens] What, so Harry too? I follow a code. His code. It's what I live by and it's how I survive. And if that's a problem, you'd better say so now.

I'd...like that. I don't want to repeat that either. But it won't have to happen as long as you don't cross the line. [almost feels like he's scolding a kid, though far more tense and dangerous]

Of course I have a problem with it! Dexter, that's not - that's not who you're meant to be. Why can't you see that? He's forced you into this box, he's the one who's restricted you, and the man's dead!

[dark look, does not like being patronized - takes his role as older sibling very seriously] Me, cross the line? It all depends on you, Dexter. On whether you - [realizes that Dexter just said he didn't want this to be about one over the other and stops himself.] On whether you can convince me that I don't need to.

[isn't raising his voice a bit. nope.] Does it matter? I already AM that, Brian. It's shaped me my whole life. I'm not going to undo what keeps me- What makes things more bearable.

You don't need to. You never needed to. How am I supposed to convince you of that?

It's pretty, isn't it? Ne, but I don't think there's a map. Not like you should need one anyways. It just seems like it goes on forever, after all! ♥

[plasters on a smile] Yeah, kinda hard to map out all of space, I guess. Still, one can't help but hope.

[scrutinizes the plane again] You're right though. It is kinda...pretty.

But why would you need a map anyways? If you don't need it, why would you hope for it?

Kinda pretty? Ah, then you don't really have any taste for this kind of thing, do you? Ne, it's really gorgeous!

Having some sort of evidence that this place makes sense would be reassuring, I guess.

I don't really look at the stars much. I prefer keeping my sights closer to home.

Ne, there are a lot of things in the world that don't really make sense, but they're fine for the most part too. I think that you're thinking too hard about it~
