[Onto the Plane appears a young woman in silver slippers, blue jeans and a button-up blouse, appearing entirely average and not at all like someone who would stand out in a crowd-- except she's not in a crowd, she's just arrived on the Plane, and that makes her far more noticeable. She steps around carefully, wide-eyed, turning in little slow pirouettes as she stares at the stars around her.]

Well! This's new. I s'pect I'm not s'posed to have ended up here, seeing as I know where I was and where I ought to've ended up, and since I'm not there, I must've done something different to turn up... well, here. [She scratches her head.] Maybe I sneezed.

[Jamming her hands into the back pockets of her jeans, she meanders around, examining her surroundings with a casual curiosity. She's especially fascinated with the seeming lack of floor.]

So if I'm not there... hmm. Let's see, I was on the Yellow Brick Road, heading away from the Emerald City... I was in the Poppyfield! [She frowns, stopping her pacing.] Glinda told me she'd gotten rid of the enchantment on those poppies.... If I'm asleep in that field right now, Ozma'll never let me hear the end of it! ...But I have to say, this isn't like any dream I've ever had. I'm fairly sure I've never dreamed of walking around in the stars before... though I might wanna start, It's awful pretty here. Wherever "here" is.

[Hands on her hips, she looks around, an approving smile on her face.] I like it. I do seem to be lost, but... eh, I wasn't really going anywhere special, anyways. Always got time for a little exploring.

Oh, I don't mean to say that all people are humans! That's awful speciesist to say! Lots of my friends aren't human, after all. I know a man made of tin, and a scarecrow, and another man who's really more of a robot but he's still a person anyway. And talking animals! Lots of talking animals. And elves and fairies and I'm pretty sure nobody from Oz is actually human anyhow.

Well, you know! The whole big-eyes open-mouth-stare thing. It's a little disconcerting. Do I have something caught in my teeth? Maybe that's it.

Ah, Oz. You are from the world created by L. Frank Baum? I am familiar with that work. The Doctor has a first-edition copy in my Library.

I do not understand. How might one such as yourself catch anything in your teeth? You are not properly equipped to hunt in such a fashion.

...Huh? No, I'm from Kansas. But I spend a lot of my time in Oz these days.

Well, I get broccoli a lot of the time. And popcorn. But I haven't eaten any in a while, so I don't know why everybody's looking at me like that. I haven't done anything wrong that I know of!

So you come and go freely between Earth and that world? Fascinating.

Ah, you mean having food particles remain trapped between your teeth after ingestion. I understand now. If you have just arrived, I cannot see how you have done anything unwarranted, and your appearance does not suggest anything unknown or exceptional. I do not know why others are staring at you. Perhaps because of your association with a fictitious work?

Well, it's not like it's hard or anything. Magic shoes, y'know.

What do you mean, association with a fictitious work? I mean, I like books, I read them a lot, but I've never written one. Not that I know of, anyway.

Magic does not exist.

The Land of Oz is a world contained within a children's story. You are able to travel there. Therefore, you have an association with it, do you not? Have I spoken incorrectly?

Someone wrote a story about Oz? Huh! I'll have to find a copy of it somewhere. But I'm sure this is the first I've heard about it.

Magic is simply a primitive understanding of scientific and mathematical concepts.

Yes. L. Frank Baum wrote The Wizard of Oz. I assumed you knew that.

It's news to me! Did he do a very good job, I wonder? If it's about the Wizard it's probably funny, at least.

I do not know how to make that assessment. It is a work of fiction. It was entertaining enough for the Doctor when he read it, at least. I do not care for such works myself.

Oh. Well, if they were going to write made-up story about Oz, I wonder why they picked the Wizard to write about. He wasn't very interesting at all! They should have written about Ozma, she's much more interesting.

Oh you know the Doctor! I just met him. He seems very nice. I think I'll bring him a pie.

I do. He is my pilot. [tilts her head] Why would you do such a thing as that?

It's really not, you know.

Your... your pilot? Oh! Are you his ship? I didn't know ships could be people too.

Well, that's what you do when you meet someone and you want to make friends with them, you bring them pie. It's only polite.

We obviously will not agree on this point. You are welcome to remain wrong.

I am not a person. I am simply projecting my consciousness in the most efficient form with which to interact with others. But yes, I am his ship. I am the TARDIS.

I have met many here and not brought them confectioneries. Was I incorrect in the omission?

Well! Agree to disagree, I s'pose!

Oh. Well, you have a consciousness, you can think and talk, I'd say that makes you a person. It doesn't matter what shape you are.

Well, no, I don't think so. But that's always the way it's done in my part of the world. I think it differs depending on where you are, so I wouldn't worry about it.

No, I am a ship. I am superior to humanoid lifeforms.

Ah, I understand. I will take note of this for future reference. Thank you, child.

I never said you weren't! I just said you were a person, is all. With your own thoughts and feelings and... and attitude, I s'pect. Wouldn't dream of calling you human. Promise.

I'm Dorothy. Dorothy Gale, from Kansas. It's very nice to meet you.

[That's a rather deep curtsy, considering she's got jeans on. But it's polite, anyway, and she thinks the TARDIS would like to see some deference]

[the TARDIS very much enjoys deference and smiles. this little girl is quite charming!] Have you learned much of this place yet?

Not really. Just that it's called the Astral Plane, and it's sort of a meeting place where people from all different worlds get brought by... by some people with questionable motives. And I've met your pilot, and his friend who seems to live with him in... in you, I s'pose. They're very nice.

The Master is neither a friend nor a welcome occupant. You would do well to keep your distance, Miss Gale.

[blink!] Really? He mentioned something about conquering worlds, but he seemed awfully nice. Not really the dangerous sort. Hmm.

...Well, I've already promised him pie, so I suppose I'll just have to get to know him better and find out what he's like for myself. Thank you very much for telling me, or I'd have been awfully put out if he did something mean.

You have no idea the atrocities he has committed. A gentle smile and kind words do not change his past nor his madness. If you insist on acquainting yourself with him, at least do not go alone.

...Goodness. I didn't know he was that dangerous!

Well, I'm sure the Doctor will be there. And if something should happen, I'll be protected against the really awful stuff anyway. But that's no reason not to be cautious, I agree.
