[Kate stumbles onto the Plane, battered and bleeding and covered in blood of various colours; she holds a gun in one hand and an ancient axe in the other, and manages to keep hold of both when she drops to her knees]

[she lets go, breathing heavily as her hands slam against the Plane; the idea, of course, is to take a breather before heading back into battle

[her head jerks up, hand shooting out to grab her gun - and then she relaxes]

...Hi.

[with a wince, pushes herself into a sitting position]

You shouldn't do that.

[Headtilt] Yeah, hello... Do what?

Surprise jumpy people. [wipes blood from her forehead, before it trickles into her eyes, because that's annoying] Doesn't always end well.

Oh, right, sorry.

[Headtilt] Demons?

[careful nod] Yeah. There weren't supposed to be so many.

They do tend to swarm.

At the worst possible moment.

[Wry smile] Indeed.

[Standing at a distance.] You've got demons too?

[looks up, with a slight, wry smile] Unfortunately.

[Small smile.] Sounds wonderful. I don't have demons in my world, but I've heard enough from other people.

Want to switch?

[Laughs.] Sure, if you don't mind dealing with a giant pandimensional nightmare realm.

[pause, then a nod] I'll take it.

[and then a wince]

Okay, no more nodding.

Ah...just a second.

[Disappears and reappears with a first aid kit.] I can help you, if you don't mind.

[her eyes widen]

I - um - sure. Thanks.

[Headtilt.] Something wrong?

No! No. [faint, sheepish smile] Just - not used to help.

Ah...I understand.

[Sits down beside her and goes to work fixing up her injuries.]

[is a very good patient, hardly moving at all; after a little while] It still feels a bit...weird, working on a team.

[Finishes bandaging her up and sits back, looking her over for anything he's missed.] What do you and your team do exactly? Fight demons?

Anything the cops can't handle, pretty much. Demons, wizards, zombies. People come to us, or we notice something odd, and we investigate.

The agency - and I use that term loosely - was started by two ex-cops, Will and Aidan.

Sounds pretty tough. Demons and things, they're common in your world?

[He heard that] Demons?

[sitting, now, she offers a small nod] Demons.

Demons? In Law & Order? What are you, Serena Deviance 12?

[stare] What the hell are you talking about?

Hey, I'm not the Assistant DA goin' around talkin' about demons. I'm an armed merc in a costume. I'm expected to talk nonsense. What's your excuse?

[snort] Please. Assistant DAs were scared of me.

By the way, the costume is tacky.

'Dead pool'? Where did that come from?

...Kind of a secret prison for experimental rejects. They had a dead pool there. Basically betting on who would die first. I was the leader of the dead pool. That's where the name comes from.

...Well, that sounds like fun.

[deep frown] No one knew about it? No, of course not, you could fill a few stadiums with the things no one knows about.

Nope. Only people who knew about it are either dead or me.
