[after spending the last few days either holed up in his office or beating the crap out of baddies (more so than usual, really), Gene has retreated to the Astral Plane where he may or may not be looking over a letter that may or may not be from Sam that may or may not have actually been written by Gene to fool his CID. it's half-finished and, after a moment, the Guv scowls and balls it up, tossing it away]

[is suddenly very, very serious and shoots to his feet, turning on Sam] What the hell have you been doing, Tyler? I'll not have my team led by some bloke from Hyde, do you hear me? What happened to my letters?

They ran out. One of the unfortunate side-effects of you not writing any new ones.

Then you should have come and asked me for more you right bastard. Or written them yourself. [because yeah, Gene's -totally- doing that, isn't he?] I thought you said CID wouldn't fall? Seems to be doing a good job from where I'm standing.

[rolls his eyes, his voice dripping with the sentiment "I am so sick of you"] Write the bloody notes or don't; it's up to you. [turns to leave]

[reaches out and grabs him, turning him roughly around to face him] What did I tell you about turning your back on me, Tyler?!

[looks down at the hands holding his precious leather jacket, and then back up at Gene] Right, then. [punch to the face!]

[stumbles back! cause he wasn't expecting that. and...what's this? bloody bastard broke his nose! have a retaliatory punch]

[but that punch is blocked, and Gene gets gut punched. And, oh yes, watch this -- Sam grabs Gene by his lapels and yanks him up, pulling their faces near] Stop being such a goddamned idiot! Write the sodding notes, ask me to notes things for your CID, stop getting yourself hammered, and tell me what the hell happened! [shoves him away]

[wheezes, holding his stomach, then bulldozes toward Sam, intent on smashing him into something -- anything -- but before he can reach that something, Sam trips and falls and Gene, being a burly man at a high momentum, can't stop and so falls on top of Sam, where he rather enthusiastically grabs Sam's collar and yanks his upper half up so he can yell in his face] I'm not bloody well asking you for anything, Tyler! I don't fucking need you, you got it? I can write my own bloody notes and get by just fine! You want to give someone pity? Give it to the bloke I dropped and leave me the hell alone.

[groans in exhasperation] I am not pitying you! [tries to push Gene off of him] Get off me!

Then what is it? [struggles to his feet, staring down at his DI] Why won't you just bloody well leave it alone, Tyler? How many times have I got to tell you?

You, DCI Hunt, [pushes himself to his feet] are my Guv. That is why I won't leave it alone.

And that's exactly why you should bloody well listen to me.

I'd listen if you'd talk.

You wanna talk to someone? Go find a bird. I don't do 'friendly chats.' [glares and lights up another cig] We wouldn't be in this mess in the first place if you'd just shut it, Tyler. Why don't you go snoop on someone else?

We wouldn't be in this mess if you had exercised self-restraint. What the hell were you thinking, running off with the Master? He's a sociopath, Gene!

And I'm a good copper! I thought I could handle it! [frustrated sigh and runs his hands through his hair, pacing] I had everything under control, Tyler. He's not the first baddie I've gotten in close with and I was just using him to find that kid so I could rough him up a bit. That was it!

Gene, he killed you! You don't go running off to rough up a kid with the bloke who did you in!

He killed me and I came back! And if I don't watch him, if I don't keep him under tabs, who else do you think he's gonna kill, Gladys? Well? If he's with me, you're safe!

No, if he's with you, he has leverage on me. He doesn't want to kill me, Guv, he wants to teach me 'manners' and get me to put a bullet through his head. Politely, I suppose.

Since when did you ever go on the take? And if he wants a bullet that bad, I'm the blasted sheriff. He doesn't need to ask the damn deputy.

Then how can he have any bloody leverage on you, Gladys? I thought you were better than that.

I am better than that. He said... [swallows, looks down and wets his lips; he's afraid Gene will yell at him for trying to protect him] He threatened to hurt you. Kill you, in front of me. Because I wasn't showing proper 'manners.'

[and he's right, Gene's a bit miffed, since he doesn't need anyone protecting him, let alone getting hurt for him after he tossed a bloke off a building] You ponce. I don't need your protection. He wants to kill me? He can bloody well try. It's not gonna happen.
