[Misaki appears in the bar wearing casual clothes, her hair stuffed up under a baseball cap. The side of her face is bruised and scratched. She limps over behind the bar, pulls a clean rag from one of the drawers and dumps some cheap whiskey over it before gingerly unbuttoning the topmost button of her shirt and pulling back the collar. There's a rather ugly gash underneath, bleeding sluggishly. Those with experience in such areas will recognize it as a weevil bite. She dabs at it gently with the cloth, hissing a little.]

What the hell was that?

No I do not. All I know is that I have to figure out a way of dealing with it and the other three that came up out of the sewer when it threw me against the wall.

[Ianto drops from the Plane, then returns with a few canisters.] Spraying these usually helps get them under control... we call them weevils.

[She closes her eyes for a moment.] Beautiful. Set them on the counter for now? [She returns her attention to the bite.] I checked three of the bars near the Gate that serve as Contractor meeting places. They're empty. I mean empty. The people you have showing up in Cardiff around the active Rift spaces? [She gives him a look and lays the cloth flat over the wound.] I'd bet my gun they're Contractors.

[He nods, sets them on the counter, then inspects the wounds.] You're lucky you didn't get worse if there were three of them. You'll need some disinfectant, though. Maybe a few stitches... you want me to get a first-aid kit?

[She nods.] Please. I came here as soon as I saw the other ones heading for me.

It's lucky you did. The spray should help you get away from them when you go back. Bullets can keep them down temporarily too. [He drops, returning with a first-aid kit. Since she's already cleaned it he pulls out some bandages.]

Only temporarily? [Absolute paranoia about wounds near the shoulder or collar bone has its advantages, it would seem. She tugs on her shirt to give him a bit more room to work.]

Unfortunately. It's possible to kill them... just difficult. We usually only keep them under control. [And Ianto starts on bandaging it.]

[Flinches a little when he grazes her old scar, out of nerves rather than pain. And she covers it up with a question, or tries to.] Where do they come from?

[He notices, but lets her cover it with her question.] They come through the Rift. We're not sure where they originate from. They tend to spend most of their time in the sewers when they're in Cardiff. What about your Contractors?

[Quiet for a minute.] They started appearing after the stars vanished and the Gates showed up. In all honesty, we still don't know where they come from. [There's a tingle of anger in her voice.] Though they do know now how to force a Contract on someone.

No. The procedure has been outlawed. But that doesn't stop extremists--the "pure scientists." There's Pure Science movement, actually, lobbying for the reinstatement of those sorts of experimental procedures.

[Little smile.] With the global outrage that's being stirred up over the existence of child-Contractor research subjects, I doubt it will be. At least not in any public fashion.
