[won't admit it's all ready begun since he stopped writing letters pretending to be Sam] You've got a problem with me? Fine. But that doesn't excuse you from doing your damned job.
[looks back up, and speaks clearly] CID won't fall because of this... mess. [even if it's been a week since they've heard from Gene, and the Superintendant wants to send people in to see if he's still alive] And I'll do my bloody job. I don't need you to tell me to.
[can't make out Sam's grumble and doesn't bother pressing him about it since it's probably just his tessie whinging, anyway]
Coulda fooled me, Gladys. [pulls out a flask, about to take a swig, then looks away and offers it to Sam, first] You'd best make sure it doesn't, or I'll spit you like a roast.
You don't need to add me to your body count. [knocks the flask away] And what the hell are you doing, drinking like this? Staying pissed all the time isn't the way to run your department, and it's not going to make you feel any better. [scoffs] Just as bad as a junkie.
[oh Sam, that was so the wrong thing to say. Gene is very, very angry and has once against slammed you against something] Don't you ever compare me to them, you hear me? Those bastards have ruined more lives and been responsible for more baddies in my City than you have a bleedin' clue about, Tyler. I am nothing like them.
[slams again] I make you a bloody peace offering and you give me lip, and you dare tell me how to run my department? [lets him go] Maybe they do it differently in 'Hyde', but in my City, coppers bloody well work together, you sodding div, and they don't question their DCI.

In Hyde, we don't throw our subordinates into walls when they point out just how badly we've screwed ourselves over -- screwed everyone over! Your actions are sending you down, and we're all going down with you if you don't shape up!
Says the bloke who was pissing on about how CID missed me and my methods. It's too bad 'Hyde' doesn't exist though, isn't it? Elsewise you could just go back there and get away from all this, couldn't you? But you can't, and you're here, and you're bloody well going to listen to me, Tyler. I messed up, but if you don't shut it and work with me, then CID will go down and I'll be the first one pointing the finger at you for being such a tessie and not helping me.
[steps away angrily and lights up a cig to keep himself busy, lest he start slamming Sam into more walls -- cause the bastard would love to call him on that, wouldn't he?] ... [opens his mouth to speak, shuts it, and just reaches for another flask, because he's honestly too sober for this conversation]
[quietly, the edge of an emotion running though his words, though he's too tired to express it] Don't, Guv. Don't get drunk because you can't face me. Yourself. Whoever it is. You don't need 'liquid courage' to get you through the day. You're better than that.
[snaps] I'm not a coward, Tyler! I'm not afraid of you or anybody else! [sighs, flask in hand, then shoves it back in his pocket with a curse, slamming a fist into the wall] It was one bloody second, just one. For that one instant I just-- [shakes his head] This isn't what I wanted, Tyler. You can at least acknowledge that, you ponce.
Well you sure bloody act like it, the way you keep prattling on.
[rubs at his face, taking a deep breath, because he still doesn't want to let Sam know the Master made him do it] I all ready told you, Tyler. I didn't mean to drop him.
[takes a long drag on his cig, then drops it, crushing it beneath his shoe and pulling out another.] What more do you want, Tyler? You can have all the story you want and it won't change the fact that I was the bastard who dropped that kid.
[looks to him, pleading, waiting. He's holding on by a thread, Gene. The fight, the 'picky pain' persistence -- it's been drained out of him. He won't, can't ask again, not right now]
[sees it, knows it, but damnit Sam, he has his pride. he doesn't want to give it up, not completely, even if it makes him look worse. it's his ghost, but he can at least give you a brief glimpse] I was stupid, Tyler. A right bloody div. The Master told me the kid set us up, I wanted to punch him around a bit. But that's it. It wasn't my idea to drop him, you got that? I never wanted to drop him.
