022 - Before You Finally Go, There's One Thing You Should Know

[Misaki is in the bar, nursing--a cup of coffee. Plain old coffee, no alcohol added. It's not even coffee so much as drinkable mud. She looks tired and angry and upset, and vaguely like she's been crying and is trying to hide it. She stares into space for a moment, looks down at the mug, and then lays her head on her arms and to all intents and purposes falls asleep.]

[[SO Misaki traded her voice for one of the translation notepads. So she can't talk, but she can communicate! The pad translates whatever is written on it into an acceptable language for the reader.]]

My mistakes last for about as long as it takes me to come back to life. You get to spend two weeks without making a sound.

[She looks like she's going to hit him for a second, but then she just shakes her head.]

It doesn't matter.

[Jack places a hand on her shoulder, squeezing softly] It won't be so bad; at least you'll have the notepad.

You won't be able to yell at me anymore, but you can still hit me, voice or no voice.

[Tiny smile. And then she seems to crumple a little bit, her eyes a bit too bright and wet. She buries her face in her hands.]

[Jack turns his whole body to face her, wrapping his arms around Misaki and hugging her, talking in what he hopes sounds to her as a reassuring tone, despite the foreign language] It'll be alright, you'll see. The two weeks will be over and then everything will return to normal.

[She takes a deep breath, shakes her head. Very wobbly writing,]

It's not that.

Something else?

[She tries to write something and it goes all blobby. And then she tries to make what should be a frustrated sound, but nothing comes out. Finally, in still-squiggly handwriting with several misspellings,]

Nightmares on top of it all. Relly realy bad.

[Jack knows about nightmares, probably more than Misaki thinks. He pulls ago from the hug, but only just enough to kiss her forehead softly, murmuring] I'm sorry Misaki, I wish I could help. I really do.

[Calming a bit now, swiping at her eyes with one hand and writing with the other.] Thougt on of the Doctrs might help.

There is technology for that, to make you sleep without dreaming, even some to temporarily block out memories [His tone implies he's not to happy with that]

[Pause. Slowly, she writes,]

I'm so tired.

Ask one of them for help then. We can figure out a long-term solution once you're rested.

[Gives his hand a little squeeze and a smile that she hopes is reassuring.]

[returns the smile, holding her hand in his]
