[a distinctly irritated woman appears on the plane; her eyes are narrowed as she looks around, and her hand hovers near the gun at her hip]

So. A shop just appears in my city for no apparent reason, a woman is eerie and cryptic at me, and now I'm…what? What is this supposed to be? One hell of a cell, I'll give you that.

[slowly, she turns round, but nothing is in sight, not from here]

Kind of dull, but I like the stars. You can't seem them very well in the city. Any city, apparently.

So, anyone going to pop up and explain this, or do I have to start randomly shooting? I really don't want to waste any bullets.

Don't... don't start randomly shooting. We've had enough deaths to keep any CID busy for a week.

It's the Astral Plane. You come on and off by, uh, sort of thinking about it. Time doesn't pass while you're here. It's an experiment and a meeting place between different universes.

DI Sam Tyler, nice to meet you.

[wry smile] I wouldn't have, probably.

...Well, that's different. Can't say I like the idea of being a guinea pig.

[oh, that gets her attention]

Detective Kate Lockley. You too. [pause] Private detective. I keep forgetting that part.

[decides not to ask about the circumstances of, presumably, going from 'detective' to 'private detective']

You took the 'meeting place between different universes' bit pretty well. Are you from a universe that has that sort of thing?

[shrug] I decided most anything was possible after I staked my first vampire.

You seem pretty used to it. Been here long?

Oh.

Half a year, maybe. With the time difference between the Plane and home, it's hard to tell.

Yeah.

How much have you found out?

Shooting? I must ask you this: what is shooting?

[stares]

You're a cat.

[pause, shrug]

Okay, seen weirder.

[pulls out her gun, pointing it down]

Shooting is what you do with this. It's very dangerous. Try to avoid these.

[He stares at the gun for a long time before saying anything.] I think that I have seen this 'shooting' before. Yes. I think this 'shooting' is what killed the fox, Loves a Dustbin.

[she frowns]

That makes sense.

...Was the fox a friend of yours?

He... well, in truth, I had a certain fear of him. But he saved the life of myself and my wife, several times, and in the end was--how would you say it? shot?--to save us again.

[her expression softens, and she shakes her head]

I'm...sorry, then.

As am I. I will admit this: I do not feel like the king I am supposed to be.

[her eyes widen]

King, huh?

[slowly, after a cursory glance around them, she kneels down]

Not even kings get to save everyone.

[Aniki is amused at you.] Steady yourself, lass. No one here's harmed me yet.

[blinks]

Really? That's odd. Big lengths to go to to just let people stand around.

Oh, I've heard there's a grand purpose to the whole thing. No notion what it is. Aniki Forfrysning. Just Aniki's best.

Kate Lockley. I'd say it's nice to meet you, but... [gestures at the Plane]

Don't go off shooting people you haven't even met yet. We're all stuck here.

Wasn't planning to, but figured they didn't know that?

[nods] Getting that, yeah. Experiment, right?
