He pulls out his sonic screwdriver and holds it aloft, testing for...well, anything recognizable. That failing, he opts for a more conventional tactic.]

[Less scary, these two at least seem conversational, which is better than most extraplanar creatures he's met]

You see! There's this very old machine that we've been trying to understand for a very long time! But we can't interact with it and thus we can't test it's functions. But luckily people like you can. We pick only the best for this, so you're quite special.
