So he dives to the side to wrongfoot (wrongscale?) the snake monster, his body slamming into the tunnel's side as he switches guns. If he's going down, he's not going to do it while reloading.
And while he's firing off every last bullet in the chamber of his SMG, that's when he hears the explosion.]
