[Inara has found herself a quiet place on the Plane and set up what looks like a small shrine, incense burning in holders while the Companion prays. she sits that way for what seems forever, quietly reciting mantras and praying for those who have died -- and killed. even when she finishes, though, she remains kneeling, expression drawn]

Is it ever going to end?

[seeing this display, he drops quickly from the Plane returning with a stick of incense that she can burn after that one is through. he sets it down on the little shrine's surface before kneeling down beside her.]

[softly, out of respect for the atmosphere she's created:] In a word, yes.

[she bows her head briefly in acknowledgment of both his presence and his offering, but she doesn't look at him]

At what price?

I'd say enough of a price has already been paid, wouldn't you?

[Damon watches her, though he's politely silent until she speaks] Yes. The Doctor will find a way, he always does. [he is blissfully unaware that one of the Doctors has died already]

If I didn't think so, I wouldn't be here now, praying for those who've been taken unfairly.

Do you really think so?

I do. [fondly] I've known the Doctor for a long time.

I have not, but I do find him to be a good man all the same.

[Satoshi bows his head in respect of the shrine.]

Eventually.

[he steps forward, placing a comforting hand on Inara's shoulder, if she doesn't mind] He is one of the few people I would trust with my lives.

Fair enough. [he switches position, stretching his legs out in front of him before regarding the woman beside him.] What's your name?

[finally looks at him, a small smile on her lips] Inara. Inara Serra.

If only he were the one in charge of these ... events.

And too many will die in the meantime.

[he smiles back] Hello Inara. Lovely name, by the way. I'm the Doctor.

If he was in charge, they wouldn't be happening. ...My name is Damon, by the way, I don't believe we've met before.

Yes. They will.

I know who you are. I've met you before, though not you, apparently.

One can only hope.

Inara. Inara Serra. A pleasure to meet you, Damon, even if the circumstances are horrible.

Who could do something like this? I fail to see the point.

Likewise. I wish I could do more to help, but I suppose speaking to Weber has been helpful in its own way.

How is that?

For someone's amusement, or scientific interest, or to sate their hate and desire for pain. There are many reasons to be cruel.

[Jamie is caught up by the sight for a moment and watches, only approaching once Inara finishes. His voice is soft, but still full of conviction when he speaks.] Aye, it will. But not soon enough, if ye ask me.

Many reasons, but none of them acceptable. I just wish there was some way to stop it.
