I'm assuming, then, he gave you the royal treatment, too?

Not this time?

[she hops down from the bar]

That's just as telling.

From what it sounded like, it seems that everyone is just that special.

[she crosses her arms]

I just hope it's not catching.

I'm not sure that anyone can catch that man's particular brand of idiocy.

[there's a faint, thoughtful smile]

Oh, there's that bit here and there that is appealing. All I am saying is they are that much harder to appreciate at the moment.

I suppose. Though I don't suppose he thinks you're dead, by any chance?

[smiles sweetly]

After this many years of knowing him, it's impossible not to have punched him once or twice, and the result can be a bit disastrous.

You do mean the Doctor, I hope. I'd have to have admitted to punching someone other than him. That doesn't mean I haven't, but the confusion would be awful.

[at that she laughs]

Our problem is he thinks I'm alive.

I mean the Doctor.

[she looks at him a bit more closing]

Which I think you already know. And he's normally sturdy enough. I'm still trying to sort out just what he got himself into.

[her look teases, but there's a hint of something else underneath it]

No. He called me and claimed my wife had been murdered and replaced by a doppelgänger. It was a bit awkward.

[brrrrrr]

Well he wants to know why I'm alive. One of life's unexpected joys.

Are you usually not alive? I know it's an on-again/off-again thing for me and Davros, but I didn't think many others tried to pull it off.

On again, off again?

[and the name Davros seems to spark something in her gaze]

That's really not my style. Once I commit to something I am all in.

[Hey, here's a person who was in the bar at the wrong time. :Db]

[The Master hops up onto the bar and sits on the counter]

He could have naturally developed this madness. He's gone through ridiculous amounts of loss this regeneration and he has hardly recovered from the Time War, so it's possible he's just snapped. Not likely, but possible.

We know that our dear experimenters are perfectly capable of manipulating the mind with chemicals and, perhaps, illusions. Thus, the second possibility is that they have caused it. In which case, it could wear out as all experiments seem to, or, alternately, I could strap him down - he'll probably flail about how we can't take him, too, he will resist us, blah blah - and I'll look him over for psionic or chemical unbalances. Usually our brains compensate, but I suppose not always.

Possibility three is that it's an external force from his own world, which would have the same dealing-with method as possibility two, I imagine, only without the 'wait it out' option that one has.

[That's a bluff and he called her on it, but River's not about to admit that to this smug stranger. She's still more than a bit annoyed at her final resting place]

Even death. I've done so well I live with it.

[her fingers tighten briefly on the spine of her journal -- it's always with her -- as she considers his suggestions]

It's not madness. Madness is a hard thing to shake off. It stays with you.

[and she'd know]

I'm going to take an option out on two or three.

[raises an eyebrow] What an interesting problem that is.

How long before he decided you were some sort of fake?

It's his own fault, but yes.

[River's feeling a bit like that herself]

I think a friend took a hard hit to the head.

Four sentences into our little chat? Maybe five?

Five? Sounds about as well as most have faired. You're all right, then?

I'm fine.

[and then only because it's him]

Just worried about him, impossible as he is. You would think getting shoved in a computer core would have cured me of that.

Oh, jeez. Seriously? What happened?
