052: A Comet Appears

[Hei isn't hurt this time! ...Okay, fine, if you look closely enough you might see some new bruises, but that's all. He's out away from most of the Plane traffic with his scope set up, trying out the new eyepieces that Diva got him for his birthday. There's a small table covered with food nearby that Hei has been picking at, and a new comet in the Astral Sky. It's a bright blue and yellow streak with a long tail, rolling across the sky like the ball of ice and gas that it is. Hei has no idea which one it is, and there's really no hope of identifying it since the Sky changes all the time, but hey, it's a comet. Comets are important.]

[Hei looks preoccupied with something other than the comet, though. After awhile he plunks down on the Plane floor with a sigh and scoops up a potsticker from his mini-buffet.]

[He mutters to himself,] Sam would never let me hear the end of it, of course...

Oh...it's nothing. I was just thinking out loud.

[Hei is preoccupied with whatever he's thinking about for now to notice her. He munches a few more potstickers, then gets up and tries a new eyepiece.]

[GRAAH NOT HIS FOOD. He grabs the table and pulls the whole thing away from the demon.]

Nothing. I was just thinking out loud. [Mrrt.] I didn't even think there would be people out here.

Hm? Oh, hi, Diva. It's nothing, really. [Broad smile.] Thanks again for the new eyepieces. They're wonderful.

A view of a comet--that good of a view--and you're barely paying attention to it. That's not nothing. Experiment or not, I'd like to think I'd know you well enough by now.

[He sighs.] I am paying attention. I like comets. [Looking up at it now.] People don't even really think about them anymore. But before, a lot of cultures saw comets as a sign of change or disaster.

[Slightly startled since he wasn't really expecting people this far out.] Hm? Oh...yes. I got some new eyepieces and wanted to try them out.

I don't think I've seen you before.

It is. I haven't seen a comet in...well, eleven years now.

{Diva looks up to the sky}

What is a comet?

[WHERE ARE ALL THESE PEOPLE COMING FROM?] What? No, I haven't done anything...

Erm, well, I tend to keep to myself a fair bit. [a soft chuckle] I usually come here when I've got work that I need to do and not enough time to do it.

[ KAITO will be staring up at the comet as well, soon as he figures out what it is Hei is looking at. He doesn't say anything, though, just stuffs his hands in his pockets. ]

It's beautiful, isn't it?

It's a...well. It's a ball of ice and rock and gas that wanders through space. You know how the planets circle the sun? It's because the gravity keeps them in that circle. But comets are a little different. They circle stars like the sun, but they travel much, much farther.

[He points up at the comet.] See how it has a tail? That's the ice and gas leaking off behind it. That's generally how you can tell it's a comet.

[Smiles a little.] They're pretty important on Earth. Or they were, before the stars disappeared. There are all kinds of legends and myths about comets. They're supposed to herald change.
